One of the biggest challenges for those leading SPHM programs is negotiating with senior executives for enough time to train staff on how to use the equipment. But it can be argued that this is only the beginning of helping staff integrate the use of patient handling equipment into their daily practice. The other side of the training coin is how, when, and by what means we measure the competency of staff using this equipment. This round table discussion between an international competency assessment expert and author from the United States and 2 very experienced safe patient handling and mobility educators from the United Kingdom and Australia explores the difference between training and competency, and the implications this has for program sustainability.
