As part of their safe patient handling and movement (SPHM) program St. Joseph’s/Candler Health System conducted a pre-implementation survey of 1600 direct caregivers and other health care staff to provide a baseline for future evaluation. The survey was conducted using a modified version of their computer-based learning questionnaire via the intranet and consisted of 19 questions, with staff being given six weeks to access and complete it. The survey was anonymous and sought out demographic data, perception of risk, effects of pain and discomfort, self-treatment, knowledge and utilization of SPHM equipment, and staff satisfaction. A total of 1228 staff (76 %) completed the survey, which will be redistributed at intervals of six months, one year, and two years post implementation.
