$25.00
This paper reviews the historical origins of safe patient handling and mobility (SPHM) technology, dating back to the mid to late twentieth century in Europe and the United States. In the slightly more than 2 decades of focus on injury prevention and SPHM programs in the United States, the authors have seen much change, development, and progress related to the technology and aids associated with SPHM. This article will provide an overview of SPHM technology for readers unfamiliar with various categories. Perspectives on the evolution in design and use of SPHM technology and the present state of SPHM technology are discussed. Consideration is given to future development needs, as well as its role in SPHM programs and healthcare institutions in the early twenty-first century.
