A Comprehensive Review of Patient Slings

While much time and money is spent on determining the correct type and number of lifts for a facility, a comprehensive risk assessment system to ensure that slings are compatible with the design of the lift to be used and meets the needs of the patient population is not always developed and implemented. This article provides information about a broad range of patient slings that can be used with safe patient handling and mobility (SPHM) technology such as ceiling lifts or hoists, mobile floor lifts and sit-to-stand or stand-assist devices to lift and move patients. Components of the risk assessment process to aide appropriate selection and safe use of slings for patients is also discussed.
