The purpose of this manuscript is to critique a high-quality, randomized control research study, which addresses the relevant topic of early mobilization in the ICU. Additionally, this provides a framework for the reader to critically appraise a study and recognize the level and quality of the study. An example of a randomized clinical trial is analyzed as an exemplar to outline the format and approach. A review of the literature citing specific early mobilization studies are included to illustrate how a hierarchy model of evidence can promote an enhanced understanding of evidence-based practice.
