The Occupational Therapy Students Moving and Handling Residency: Program Evaluation
$25.00
Occupational therapists (OTs) are responsible for performing and teaching safe client moving and handling (MH); therefore, it is essential that OTs are competent in evidence-based MH practices. Based on preliminary evidence, OT programs in North America devote minimal attention to MH. The purpose of this study was to complete a program evaluation of the organization, structure, and content of a student MH training program via thematic analysis. Fourteen students from McMaster University and the University of Toronto participated in the MH residency during their final fieldwork placement. Participants developed practical skills in the field of MH that they confidently use in their current practice. Program modifications will focus on greater coordination among the various parties. This research will be used to raise awareness about the need to enhance MH curriculum in OT schools across North America and to guide the development of MH training programs for OT students and practicing clinicians.
